Reddit and AI search: how to get mentioned in the threads AI reads (without getting banned)
Updated October 19, 2026 · 8 min read · By the Selka research team

short answer
Reddit is one of the sources AI engines lean on most, especially Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, and especially for “best X” and “X vs Y” questions. ChatGPT reads Reddit far more than it cites it, and its Reddit citations dropped sharply in August 2026. To use Reddit well: find the threads that rank in Google for your topic, answer genuinely as yourself, follow each community's rules, and track whether those threads name you.
- Perplexity and Google AI Overviews lean on Reddit most. ChatGPT reads it but rarely links it.
- ChatGPT's Reddit citations fell more than 85% in a few days in August 2026. Plan for change.
- The threads that matter are the ones ranking in Google for your topic, not the most popular ones.
- Undisclosed promotion gets removed, and banned accounts lose their whole history.
Why AI engines lean on Reddit
AI answers to “what should I buy?” questions want real opinions from real people, and Reddit is the biggest pile of them on the web. Reddit also has data deals with Google and OpenAI, and Google AI Overviews even show a block of Reddit perspectives for some questions.
That makes Reddit strongest on the questions that matter most for sales: “best X for Y”, “X vs Y” and “is X worth it?”.
It isn't the same on every engine
The biggest mistake in Reddit advice right now is treating every AI engine the same. As of October 2026:
| Engine | How it uses Reddit |
|---|---|
| Perplexity | Leans on Reddit more than any other major engine. |
| Google AI Overviews | Cites Reddit heavily, and shows a Reddit perspectives block for some questions. |
| ChatGPT | Reads Reddit often but rarely links it. Its Reddit citations fell more than 85% in mid-August 2026. |
| Gemini | Cites Reddit much less than the others. |
Find the threads that actually matter
AI engines mostly reach Reddit through search. A great thread that never ranks rarely gets read. So start in Google, not in Reddit:
- Search
site:reddit.complus your topic, for examplesite:reddit.com best crm for startups. - Note the threads in the top results, their subreddit and their age.
- Search again with your brand name in quotes, for example
site:reddit.com "acme crm" crm for startups, to see which of them already mention you. - Start with ranking threads that name your competitors but not you.
Relevance beats popularity here. The threads AI uses are usually the ones most specific to the question, not the ones with the most upvotes. Our off-site tool does exactly this from Google results, without touching your Reddit account.

How to take part without getting banned
- Read the rules first. Many subreddits ban self-promotion completely.
- Answer the actual question.Give specific, first-hand help. Mention your product only where it genuinely fits, and say it's yours.
- Use your own account. No bought accounts, no sock puppets, no vote buying. Banned accounts lose their whole comment history, including mentions AI had already picked up.
- Be patient. Threads take time to rank, and changes show up in Google over days to weeks.
Measure the result, not the effort
Count how many of the ranking threads for your topic name you, weighted by how high they rank. That moves faster than AI answers do, so it's an early sign your off-site work is landing. Then track whether AI engines start naming you for the same questions.
Reddit is one piece of off-site work. Review sites, YouTube and “best X” lists matter too. See the full plan in how to get your business recommended by ChatGPT.
